VIDEO | Shocking: People Falling From Sky; Chaos at Kabul Airport, Seven Dead

At least seven people were killed today after thousands of Afghans fled flooding runways and terminals at Kabul airport amid chaos after Taliban militants took control of the country following the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces.

The Pentagon says US troops have killed two people after they “waved” their weapons. There was no immediate word on how the other five were killed, but airport video showed hundreds of people trying to force their way into a moving plane, with some clinging to landing gear as the plane tried to take off.

U.S. officials say troops fired several warning shots into the air to try to disperse crowds around the plane, which was carrying U.S. diplomats and embassy staff. They said they had been forced to temporarily close the airport to restore order and clear the airport so that flights could resume.

Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE / RL) reports that in contrast to the situation at the airport, the streets of the capital are generally calm, with Taliban troops patrolling the capital. The diplomatic “Green Zone” in Kabul looks like a ghost town from where many countries are rushing to evacuate their diplomats and embassy staff.

“Afghanistan is at a crossroads. “The security and well-being of its citizens as well as international politics are at stake,” EU Commissioner Joseph Borrell told reporters. An extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union member states will be held tomorrow in Brussels.

European officials are negotiating with the leaders of the 27-nation bloc to issue visas to Afghan workers at the Kabul bloc mission for them and their families. It is estimated that it is about 600 people.
