President Joe Biden signed the bill last night to create a new federal holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States.

Every year, America’s national holiday is celebrated on June 19th.

“By marking June 19 as a federal holiday, all Americans will be able to feel the power of this day, and learn about our history and celebrate the progress we have made so far, but also the things we have yet to do.” “, Said the President of the United States.

During the signing of the bill in the White House, Biden paid tribute to 94-year-old Opal Lee, an activist who was often described as the “Grandmother of June 19”, receiving a standing ovation from those present at the ceremony.

Li stands for national recognition on 19 June , in the last 40 years.

Legislation marking June 19 as a national holiday was on Biden’s table after it was passed by a majority vote in the Senate, with 415 votes in favor and 14 against in the House of Representatives.

The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union troops informed black slaves in Galveston, Texas, that they were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Declaration.

Many states have already marked June 19 as a holiday.
