The Russian embassy in Washington has said that Russia will not back down from the threat of US sanctions.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the embassy said that the generator of tensions in relations between the two countries is not Moscow, but Washington, RIA Novosti reports.
“We will not back down and stop listening to the threats of US sanctions,” the statement said.
The Russian embassy said the United States had instigated what it called “a radical-nationalist coup in Kiev, as a result of which Crimean residents were threatened with destruction and voted to reunite with Russia.”
The embassy said Washington was supplying Ukrainian authorities with modern offensive weapons and accused the United States of bringing its military infrastructure closer to Russia’s borders, in violation of the principle of the inseparability of security.
At the same time, the statement stressed that Russia has a sovereign right to move its armed forces on its territory and that it is not a threat to anyone.
Western nations have threatened Russia with unprecedented sanctions, accusing it of plotting to invade Ukraine. Moscow denies the allegations, saying it is moving troops to its territory.
