Ottawa, the capital of Canada, has declared a state of emergency following protests by truck drivers against mandatory vaccinations and other restrictions. The protest lasted more than a week, with Mayor Jim Watson saying “the city is completely out of control” and that there were more protesters than police.
He called the protesters a “threat to the safety of citizens”. Truck drivers paralyzed the city center with their vehicles. The Freedom Convoy began as a movement against the government’s decision to vaccinate all truck drivers crossing the Canadian-US border.
Speaking to Canadian radio station CFRA, Watson said the protesters were behaving “inappropriately”, adding that they were “making noise and setting off fireworks” and “behaving as if they were having fun”. “It is obvious that more and more of us are losing this battle. “We have to change that and bring the city back under control.”
