More than 1,400 flights to the United States were canceled yesterday after a winter storm hit the northeastern United States a day earlier, prompting several states to declare a state of emergency.

According to flight tracking website FlightAware.com, the total number of canceled flights inside, inside or outside the United States was about 1,450 in the afternoon. As many as 1,774 US-related flights were delayed, the data showed.

In Massachusetts, about 31,000 of the 2.6 million users were without power earlier in the day, according to PowerOutage.us.

Utility company Eversors Energy said most of its powerless customers would be connected by the end of the day.

The storm also caused three deaths in New York, Long Island alone. An elderly woman was found in the parking lot of a hotel in Uniondale, New York, on Saturday, with the car window open, and authorities reported the deaths of two men, aged 53 and 75, who fell on Saturday while clearing snow from rooftops.
