The first US troops arrived in Romania

The first US troops arrived in Romania on Tuesday as part of a reinforcement of NATO’s left-wing allies, Romanian Defense Minister Vasile Dincu said.

US President Joe Biden has ordered the deployment of nearly 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania to protect NATO’s eastern flank from a potential overflow from the Ukraine crisis.

The Stryker squadron, with about 1,000 US troops stationed at the Filsek base in Germany, will be sent to Romania. About 1,700 members of the 82nd Airborne Division from the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina will be sent to Poland. In addition, 300 more US troops will be transferred from Fort Bragg to Germany. The gradual arrival of US troops in Poland began on Saturday.

Romanian Defense Minister Vasile Dincu told reporters on Tuesday that the top 100 US troops are already in Romania and dealing with logistics.

“The Americans have arrived. “More than 100 US specialized troops are being trained together with our logistics experts, which means it will not be long before the rest of the troops arrive,” Dinku added.

The United States currently has about 900 troops in Romania, which has been a NATO member since 2004 after being accepted by Bucharest to announce a military alliance with some non-Alliance countries, including Russia. A ballistic missile defense system is also stationed in Romania, some as part of NATO and some under special bilateral arrangements.

France has also said it plans to send troops to Romania and offer to be the leading country in the country’s future NATO mission, which should have about 1.00o troops from various countries. The decision could be made at the next meeting of NATO defense ministers in mid-February.

NATO is considering a long-term military position on Europe’s eastern flank to bolster its defenses, Alliance Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed on Monday. The military bloc currently has forces rotating in Eastern Europe and beyond, and a contingent of about 13,000 troops from NATO countries outside the region is constantly present in Eastern Europe.
