Von der Leyen: EU Wants Ukraine to Become a Member

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last night expressed unequivocal support for Ukraine becoming a member of the European Union, calling the country now under Russian attack “one of us.”

Von der Leyen made the remarks in an interview with Euronews hours after the 27-nation bloc decided to deliver weapons to the country during the war for the first time in its history.

“Indeed, over time, they belong to us. “They are one of us and we want them to join the bloc,” von der Leyen told Euronews.

Ukraine, a democracy of 44 million people, gained independence from Moscow in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and sought to join the Western NATO-EU military alliance, which Russia vehemently opposes.

Less than four days after its launch, the Russian invasion of Ukraine provoked an unprecedented joint political, strategic and economic response from the West in its scope and coordination.
